Building Analytics Tool Deployment at Scale: Benefits, Costs, and Deployment Practices

Buildings are becoming more data-rich. Building analytics tools, including energy information systems (EIS) and fault detection diagnostic (FDD) have emerged to enable building operators translate large amounts of time-series data into actionable findings achieve non-energy benefits. To expedite adoption facilitate technology innovation, owners, developers, researchers need reliable cost–benefit evidence-based guidance on deployment practices. This paper fulfills these needs with the use survey from a wide-ranging research industry partnership program that covers thousands buildings installed tools. The indicates after two years implementation, organizations using FDD tools EIS achieved 9% 3% median annual savings, respectively. base cost recurring for USD 0.65 per square meter (m2) (USD 0.06 foot [ft2]) 0.22 m2 0.02 ft2), 0.11 0.01 ft2) EIS. common metrics analyses used in support discovery efficiency measures summarized detail. Two best practice examples identified maximize benefits tool implementation also presented. Opportunities advance state include simplified integration management, efficient processes acting outputs.
